Detroit Rock & Roll History

There are very few local bands still around that collectively possess the Classic Rock-N-Roll expertise that The ColdWater Band boasts.  Its musicians have been cranking out “Motor City ” style sounds for decades.  Musicians that were born and raised in the heart of Detroit.

The making of ColdWater began when Mario “Bee” and Larin Michaels befriended one another in high school.   By then both had learned and forged musical talent early in their teenage years.  Mario and Larin decided to form a band made up of local teenage musical talent from the area.  Their band name was called “The NOBLEMEN” and fast grew their reputation for tremendous sound and precise harmony.  As one of the Detroit area’s “must have” bands, they played at nearly every high school and teen club in the Metro-Detroit area.

The NOBLEMEN were together from 1964 to 1969 and during that time they became one of the most sought after acts in Michigan. They eventually recorded and worked with then soon to be very big stars from the Detroit area.  They played major concert venues as opening acts for some of these individuals and groups; most notably, The Supremes in concert at Cobo Arena in 1966.  They also performed on the same billing as The Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Spinners and other Motown greats at the Michigan State Fair Grounds. The NOBLEMEN also performed warm-up acts for Paul Revere and the Raiders at Riverside Arena in Riverside Ontario and backed up Freddie “Boom Boom” Cannon in his show at Greenlawn Groves Arena in Romulus, Michigan during Freddie’s “Palisades Park” hit record tour.  The NOBLEMEN worked with many of the upcoming artists of the day at the very same booking sites as Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, Mitch Ryder, The Rationals and many, many more….
After a last musical push by The NOBLEMEN in the late 1960’s it was time for them to pursue college educations and meet military obligations.  The band dissolved but the members stayed in touch during their many years apart….

During the mid-1970’s, Mike Winfield was with a new start up band called ColdWater, Mario then joined the band and later Larin Michaels.  Once again back together; with the talent and guitar expertise of Mike Winfield added, ColdWater emerged as a top booked act in all of Metro Detroit.  Soon into the evolution of this “new” ColdWater Band they were recording.  ColdWater successfully released “Woman” on Squire Records in 1979.  The record was promoted by Mr. Ed Blake. The ColdWater Band remained a solid rock and roll act up to the early 1980’s.

All the members, Mario, Larin & Mike all pursued other professions and were very successful in their careers outside of music. However…the music was never very far from their hearts.  In 2008 these three men, who remained close friends throughout the years, have regrouped after 25 years apart.  Together to once again rock the house with good old fashioned classic Rock & Roll!
